Visual analysis of biomolecules is a fundamental subject of basic and applied biologic research. In such fields as genetics, biochemistry, and molecular biology, visible fluorescent protein constructs provide researchers with a tool of enormous value that has facilitated the identification of key molecules involved in cellular function in tissue sections and in living cells. Recently, the success of fluorescent methods in biologic research has instigated vast efforts to develop new fluorescent probes for molecular imaging of key cellular molecules in vitro and in vivo.
